The Deerfield Dozen
This collection of Deerfield rods represents an intriguing microcosm of evolutionary design. In the mid-80s, when no one seemed to want a four-piece fly rod, we actually doubled up on the idea with our twin-tip Power Pak series using a range of four line weights. Today, that same versatility can be taken with you astream with Deerfield’s new VestPak inserts that also usher in a breakthrough design in power casting.

PARABOLIC
While most rodmakers still obsess over modulus or flex, there are just two companies who now combine both for obtaining more effective thrust in a fly rod. So far, it seems there are two ways to go about this. One approach uses overlapping layers of composite fabric with increasing fiber density. It must work because the company using it keeps dominating so many fly casting meets at short, medium and long distances.
On the other hand, Deerfield achieves a similar heightened response on a four-piece rod with its six-inch inserts between the tip and mid-section. The stiffer modulus of the short piece, working in tandem with the longer flexing sections, creates a remarkable new synergy, akin to those “overlapping layers” of increasing fiber density while producing three more line modes, to boot! The mid-insert lightens the base rod by a line weight, the tip by two and with both inserts, by three.
One other distinction should be noted and that is the often-overlooked stripping guide. Rodmakers continue to place it at the apparently agreed-upon 30 inches from the butt end. Moving it closer to 25 makes a world of difference in ease of pick-up, maintaining line tension and absorbing the shift in load between back haul and forward loading. At 25 inches, there is no loss of line tension, that weightless gap between loads. The rod is more stable at this point of wider hoop strength. You will be amazed at the sense of immediacy the rod has and how it comes to life throughout the cast.
We can only surmise how well the American fly rod is evolving. And yet, to be able to carry such versatility in the back of your vest is now a reality. At the same time, though, we couldn’t resist using the venerable parabolic concept developed by famed hotelier and expert fly caster Charles Ritz. He favored the shortened butt/weight-forward effect of the parabolic that works so well with the inserts which inspired us to make the list here.
